Background of the study
Urbanization is a potent force shaping language use in modern societies, and its effects are prominently visible among Hausa speakers in Kano. Rapid urban growth and the accompanying socio-economic changes have influenced linguistic choices, often leading to a shift from traditional language use to more cosmopolitan forms of expression (Sani, 2023). In Kano, the influx of diverse populations and the expansion of urban centers have created a dynamic linguistic landscape where Hausa coexists with other languages and dialects. This interaction has led to the emergence of hybrid language practices, with speakers adapting their linguistic behavior to suit the demands of urban life. The changing urban environment has not only affected everyday communication but also the transmission of cultural heritage and traditional values. Scholars note that urbanization contributes to both the preservation and transformation of language practices, as individuals negotiate identity and social mobility within an evolving cityscape (Bello, 2024). This study examines the influence of urbanization on the linguistic choices of Hausa speakers in Kano, exploring how urban dynamics shape language use in formal, informal, and mixed communication contexts (Abdullahi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
The rapid urbanization of Kano has resulted in significant changes in the linguistic practices of Hausa speakers. Traditional language norms are increasingly influenced by the pressures of modern urban life, leading to a shift towards more urban-centric linguistic forms (Muhammad, 2024). This change poses challenges to the preservation of cultural heritage and may lead to a dilution of traditional linguistic identity. Furthermore, the adoption of new linguistic practices in formal and informal settings creates potential conflicts between traditional language expectations and modern communication needs. There is a pressing need to understand how urbanization influences these linguistic choices and the resulting impact on both individual identity and community cohesion (Yusuf, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the influence of urbanization on linguistic choices among Hausa speakers in Kano.
  2. To assess the impact of urban language practices on traditional Hausa communication.
  3. To identify strategies that promote the preservation of traditional linguistic elements amidst urbanization.

Research questions:

  1. How has urbanization affected the linguistic choices of Hausa speakers in Kano?
  2. What are the key differences between traditional and urban-influenced language practices among Hausa speakers?
  3. What strategies can help maintain traditional Hausa language practices in urban settings?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Urbanization significantly alters the linguistic choices of Hausa speakers in Kano.
  2. Hausa speakers in urban areas demonstrate a marked deviation from traditional language norms.
  3. Interventions promoting cultural heritage can mitigate the effects of urban linguistic transformation.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores the impact of urbanization on the linguistic practices of Hausa speakers in Kano, offering insights into the broader implications for cultural preservation and language evolution. The findings can assist policymakers and cultural organizations in developing strategies to balance modern influences with traditional language maintenance, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive understanding of urban language dynamics (Gambo, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the role of urbanization in influencing the linguistic choices of Hausa speakers in Kano. It focuses exclusively on urban settings and does not extend to rural linguistic practices.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Urbanization: The process of population concentration in urban areas resulting in socio-economic and cultural changes.
  2. Linguistic Choices: Decisions made by individuals regarding language use in various contexts.
  3. Hausa Speakers: Individuals who use the Hausa language as their primary mode of communication.
